i thought i should probably post the final product so that it can be put into development. i also gave it its own research, which i hope it will share with its brothers (the equivalent of the scout probe and wide-range scan probe) i image that "linear scanning" would go under "improved computer tech" |

I like it!! Add it. I also like the family idea for it, like you said.[/quote] _________________ "I'd like to live just long enough to be there when they cut off your head and stick it on a pike as a warning to the next 10 generations that some favors come with too high a price - Vir to Mr. Morden |

Hi Admin,
Do yoou possibly have time to add this probe to the game?
Thank You Very Much.

this is really cool! i havent been on the st forums since last april and my invention is still being considered! thanks everyone!
but i have been looking over the specs and realized that i made a big mistake. first, i based this on the scout probe and not the investigation probe (except for the speed). second, when i was doing the calculations i accidentally changed sectors into lys which threw off the results by a factor of 1000. so basically the whole thing is messed up. but i re-did the math and here are the correct specs:
scanradius: 4 sectors
scanrange: 180 sectors
the rest of it is all good. thanks again to everyone for keeping this alive _________________ But why male models? |

I like it.
I will re-check the math since I am so full of myself _________________ Running the P since 2007 |

an inv probe has scan radius 13
sphere volume is (4*pi*radius*'radius*radius)/3 ~=9203 cubic sectors
the way the streak probe works you would get a cylinder but also a half-sphere added at each end, since it scans from start to destination.
the two half-spheres add up to a sphere of probes scanradius.
cylinder: pi*scan lenght*radius*radius
sphere: (4*pi*radius*radius*radius)/3
so, we want to solve pi*length*radius*radius+(4*pi*radius*radius*radius)/3=9203
since we have two unknowns, we need to check for various scan lengths and radiuses, but it seems best to focus on an even number radius, namely 1 or possibly 2
so we get for radius 1
pi*length+(4*pi)/3=9203
length+4/3=9203/pi
length=9203/pi-4/3=2928 sectors. This seems really unneccesary.
let's try 2
pi*length*4+4*pi*8/3=9203
length+8/3=9203/(4*pi)
length=9203(4*pi)-8/3
length=730 sectors or so
let's try 3
pi*length*9+4*pi*27/3=9203
9*length+36=9203/pi
length+4=9203/(pi*9)
length=9203/(pi*9)-4
length=321
So I would say that Dumenops calculations have been a bit unfair to the streak probe.
It seems that radius 4 is suitable
this gives us a cylinder and two half-spheres with volume
256*pi/3+16*pi*length
we want this to add up to approx 9203
length+16/3=9203/(16*pi)
length=178
So, I would go for radius 4. _________________ Running the P since 2007 |

which, I see, is exactly what Dumenop arrived at after re-calculating. _________________ Running the P since 2007 |

after some thinking, i think now, that this feature would be a nice improvement to the investigation probe, like it is now.
the investigation probe could use this upgrade, that it scans the area, where it is flying on its path within a radius of 1 sector. so it would give you two kind of result:
1. the cylinder from its actual position to your base
2. the final scan when it has reached the destination
i think it is more realistic this way, cause why should a probe be blind, when it's flying on its path? |

because it is in hyperspace?
The streak probe has advanced hyperspace sensors that can actually see the surroundings while in transwarp
No, seriously, I think an inv probe upgrade is ok also, but a streak probe has its own advantages and drawbacks. _________________ Running the P since 2007 |

i like admins idea of modifying the investigation probe. but then i think the scout and wide range probes should be modified too. this modification would be hard to do with the scout cuz its spherical scan is already so small. maybe it also scans only what it passes directly over? so it would scan a coord only if it passes directly through it (its scan radius is zero, it scans a line).
but if it is decided that linear scanning probes are going to be put into the game separate from the already existing probes, then i have come up with the specs for two more to match the scout and wide range. these probes would have the same speed as their spherical-scanning counter parts.
wide range:
radius: 12
length: 75
(this scan area is equivalent to the wide range probe if half spheres aren't added to either end)
scout:
radius: 0 (line, as explained above)
length: 300 _________________ But why male models? |

i think a limit to the length of the scan is not needed, cause you see the coords on the way anywav, and i don't want to force anyone to log in every two hours to get the maximum result of his/her probe.
so it will always scan all the way from your base to the actual position |

That certainly sounds more realistic. _________________ Calvin: I'm a genius, but I'm a misunderstood genius.

would this modification apply to the wide range probe or scout as well? |

Hi Admin,
Do you have time and is it possible to get this into the game now?
Or is it avaliable and I missed it?
Thanks for your time!
